Christmas treat for Street Children

Christmas is definitely in the air!

As part of their Christmas celebration, the Ayala Young Leaders Alliance (AYLA) and Volunteers Unlimited (VU) spread some Christmas cheer by spending the day with the street children of Brgy. 450, Manila last December 19, 2010.

For their special Christmas treat, AYLA and VU along with volunteers from Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) – Intramuros played a round of friendship games with the children. Celebrating old Filipino games, the volunteers shared rounds of laughter with the children as they played Patintero, Tumbang Preso, and Football sa kalye.

More than 60 street children from the area attended the event and were divided into two teams: orange and blue. And it was a tight battle, the orange team beat the blue team during the games. As a treat, winners were given medals: gold and silver respectively.

And to spread the Christmas spirit just a little bit more, the children received school supplies, toys, and food packs.

The Christmas special was done in partnership with DSWD as part of their “Paskong Ligtas sa Batang Kalye (Pasakale) Project” program. The program hopes to keep the children off the streets during the holiday season to decrease the cases of street children being run over by cars as they peddle for food and money during the holidays.

Virlanie Foundation donated toys for the children, Shell offered Toy Story 3 toys as well, and BPI-Intramuros donated the school supplies packs to the children. ALC Foundation likewise donated workbooks for the children, and AYLA alumni and other partners helped extensively in making the event a success.

With Christmas definitely in the air, and holiday cheer all around, we wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
